What Should I Do to Prepare for my Roofing Project?

You’ve looked through the quotes, identified the best roofing materials for your home and hired a professional roofing contractor. You might be wondering what you should do next.

The contractor is coming later in the week to work on your roof, but what do you need to do to make the job go, as quickly and smoothly as possible?

Let’s take a quick look at what you’ll want to do to prepare for your roofing project:

  1. If you have fragile items hanging on your walls or ceiling, it would be a good time to remove them to a safe place for the duration of the roofing project. Vibrations due to the crew installing and working on your roof could cause those items to fall off your walls.
  2. Move cars and vehicles away from the roof’s perimeter by at least 15-20 feet. If something falls off the roof, you don’t want it landing on your boat or classic car. You’ll also want to park your car on the street, as that will leave your driveway open for material deliveries and work trucks.
  3. Do you have a swimming pool or hot tub? Fallen debris and nails can cause a lot of damage to your pool. You may want to cover your pool with a tarp. However, prior to installing your new roof, many contractors will tarp your pool with poly propylene.
  4. Its a good idea to temporarily relocate items that are in the area of the roofing project, such as planters, lawn furniture, etc. in order to prevent any damage.
  5. If you have small children, you’ll want to keep them away from the construction area until the cleanup crew has finished. As well as remind them of the dangers of nails, metal flashing, ladders and other typical hazards.
  6. If you have an antenna or satellite dish on your roof, your TV may stop working during the project.
  7. Cover items in your attic and remove fragile pieces. With all that hammering, you know it’s going to shake loose all the dust in your rafters. If you have open beams or a cathedral ceiling, this may cause a lot of dust in the rest of your home as well.
  8. It’s inevitable to avoid the noise, due to the constant hammering and banging. If you have any concerns talk to your contractor.

Hopefully these tips and pieces of advice will help make your roofing project a little more predictable and less stressful.
